January 28th 2017 is a new year day on the Chinese old calendar, which is called the Chinese New Year. Though Malaysia is a Muslim country, they grossly celebrate this day. This is because about 30 % of populations in Malaysia is so called Chinese-Malay, and business persons conduct big promotion for this day seeing as a big business chance, like a Christmas in Japan. Hotels and shopping centers are swankly decollated and a lion dances has performed here and there. Besides, the Chinese New Year day is one of the national holiday in Malaysia.
FYI, there are four new year days in Malaysia, ie. 1st January, the Chinese new year, Indian new year and new year day in Islamic calendar. All these are public holidays.
